GermGuardian AC4100 Air Cleaner Review

One of the Best Filters for a Small Room

You never know the true value of quality air until you experience the difference between low-quality air and high-quality air. A lot of the time, it’s hard to know what is floating around in the air of our homes and office spaces. Many sources have repeatedly discussed that outdoor air is higher quality than most indoor air, even in major metropolises such as New York and Los Angeles. In fact, I just watched something about this on the news the other night.

Many of us don’t have the ability to open our windows – we have no windows or we live in cold climates. Some of us just don’t want to open our windows – trust me, it’s no fun when all you hear is traffic! So what can we do to reduce allergens, chemicals, bacteria, viruses, and other aggravating elements from our air? Why, we can get an air purifier, of course! Let’s take a look at this option by GermGuardian.

Compact Yet Efficient

No larger than a typical stereo speaker, and actually built to somewhat resemble one, this compact air filtration system can actually handle a space as large as 170 square feet. This means that it could handle a room as big as 12 by 14, 13 by 13, 10 by 16 – you get my point. While the manufacturer’s website says that this is meant for a bathroom or bedroom, my mid-sized living room would beg to differ. I find it rather comforting that my 10 by 15 living room could be well-serviced by this tiny, easy-to-accommodate unit.

True HEPA and UV-C

If you have already taken a stroll over to my buying guide, you must already know what it is that makes a great air filter. If you haven’t, I’ll give you a quick overview – kind of like the Cliff’s Notes version. Any good filter will, obviously, clean the air. But what does that mean? Clean air is air which is clear of bothersome particles (such as dust and hair), allergens (such as pollen and dander), as well as harmful chemicals (such as tobacco smoke or the chemicals used in cleaning products.)

This unit’s effect pre-filter will grab onto those larger particles – the ones you can actually see floating around in the air. The second stage of the process – the True HEPA filter – will remove all those nasty allergens. In fact, it will remove 99% of those allergens – more than enough to say goodbye to mid-day sneezing and mid-night wheezing.

Any of the chemical annoyances not caught up in the HEPA filter will be neutralized by the UV-C lighting system. The titanium dioxide used by this light doesn’t only neutralize harsh chemicals, however, it also stops bacteria and viruses in the tracks. Kids have the flu? Spouse bring home a nasty virus? Worried about mold build-up in your basement area after a small flood? The UV-C portion of this filter will work hard to protect you from all of those potential dangers.

Summary

With three stages of filtration – including one which removes large particles, one which removes small particles, and one which neutralizes chemicals, viruses, and bacteria – this is one competitive air filtration system. Certainly, it is one deserving of its place on this website.
